Froggie 2008

FAQ For Cincinnati State Students - Updated 10/20/08

Q: Are the faculty going on strike???

A: It's true that the full-time faculty represented by Cincinnati State AAUP have filed a notice with the State saying that if a new faculty contract is not resolved, faculty will strike beginning at 6 a.m. on Monday, October 27.

Cincinnati State faculty DO NOT want a strike. We want to work with the College administration to reach an agreement that is fiscally responsible and preserves our ability to continue offering you high-quality education and career preparation, with the personal attention you deserve.

Negotiation sessions are scheduled for Oct. 22 and Oct. 24. There's plenty of time to settle a contract without a strike.

Q: What can students do to keep a strike from happening?

A: You can let the College Board of Trustees know that you want their negotiating team to reach a fair and responsible contract settlement with the faculty, so that your education does not have to be disrupted. Send your message to:

Cincinnati State Board of Trustees
c/o Dr. John Henderson, Interim President
Cincinnati State
3520 Central Pkwy
Cincinnati OH 45223
Phone: 569-1515 Email: John.Henderson@cincinnatistate.edu

If you wish, you may also express your concerns to the Academic Vice President:

Dr. Monica Posey
Phone: 569-1511 Email: Monica.Posey@cincinnatistate.edu

Or express your concerns to the Dean of your academic division:

Dan Cayse, Dean, Business Technologies
Phone: 569-1624 Email: Dan.Cayse@cincinnatistate.edu

Paul DeNu, Dean, Center for Innovative Technologies
Phone: 569-1742 Email: Paul.DeNu@cincinnatistate.edu

Marianne Krismer, Dean, Health & Public Safety
Phone: 569-1686 Email: Marianne.Krismer@cincinnatistate.edu

Rayma Smith, Dean, Humanities & Sciences
Phone: 569-1616 Email: Rayma.Smith@cincinnatistate.edu

Q: If there is a strike, what will happen to my classes? Will I get a final grade and credit for the work I have done? Will my financial aid be affected? Should I ask for a refund of my tuition? Should I register for Late Fall classes?

A: You will have to make a personal decision about what to do if there is a strike.

We encourage you to seek answers from the College administration (people listed in the previous question) about how classes will be covered, how grades will be assigned (and who will decide what your grade should be), whether your credits will count, and whether your financial aid will be affected.

If you are not satisfied with the answers you receive, or if you are not satisfied that you are getting the quality you deserve, we hope you will express your concerns to Dr. Henderson and Dr. Posey.

Q: Doesn't union negotiating mean you're just arguing about getting more money?

No.

It's true that the faculty want a fair raise. But other concerns are just as important.

We want all of your classes-including online classes-to provide high quality learning opportunities for you. And we want to be sure faculty members have appropriate time-day-to-day, term-to-term, and year-to-year-to prepare, to add new information and new technology to our courses, to answer your calls and email messages, and to continue giving you the personal attention you deserve.

Q:I'd like to show my support for the faculty-what can I do?

A: There are several things you can do:

- Let the administration know that you support a fair and reasonable settlement to the faculty contract.
- Tell other students to get in touch with the administration, too.
- If you know any Cincinnati State graduates, co-op employers, or others who have connections to the College, ask them to make their views known, too.
- If you want to get an "AAUP" sticker or button, send a message to exec@cinstateaaup.org, and we'll let you know when the AAUP Office will be open so you can pick up stickers and buttons.

Q: Why should students care about what goes into the faculty contract?

A: Because the results will affect the quality of your education.

Every time Cincinnati State students are surveyed, they say that one of the most valuable things about attending this College is working with teachers, advisors, co-op coordinators, and counselors who are experts and who really care about helping our students succeed.

We want a contract that will make sure our full-time faculty members can continue to provide the highest level of quality, and we want to be sure Cincinnati State will continue to be the kind of college where excellent faculty members want to spend their careers.

Q: Does settling the faculty contract mean that tuition will go up?

A: No matter what the contract settlement is, the tuition rate you will pay during the 2008-09 academic year has already been set by the College Board of Trustees, and is already at the maximum rate allowed for this year by Ohio law.
